Fall tips for your home

Habitation Fall tips for your home

Autumn weather still gives beautiful days, but it can also reserve surprises: leaves that fall in number, strong winds and continuous rain are common in this season. It is also the time to do the last checks of the house before the arrival of the first cold.

  1. Windows: Check the condition of caulking and sealants outside the windows and repair as needed. You can also install weather stripping and insulating films, which are inexpensive and effective against heat loss.
  2. Exterior doors: Check the leakage and air leakage of exterior doors, including the garage door. If necessary, add weather stripping on the inner or outer perimeter.
  3. Curbs: Make sure they are clean and free of debris and leaves.
  4. Gutters: The leaves fall off until mid-November. Clean your gutters during this time; they will be more effective during winter thaws.
  5. Foundation and exterior walls: There is still time to repair cracks before the cold to prevent water infiltration. Also, don't let dead leaves and debris accumulate near the foundation, especially if you have wood or vinyl siding.
  6. Heating system: Clean dust in electrical appliances, grids, pipes, etc. Have your central system checked as needed and change the filters, if necessary.
  7. Heat pump: Make sure the outdoor unit is protected from snow. Be sure to have the complete system checked by a professional if they are over 5 years old.
  8. Outdoor faucets: Follow the draining and closing procedure. Inside, close the water supply pipe valve outwards if applicable. If you haven't already, protect the pipe with insulating jacket and consider installing an antifreeze faucet.
  9. Garden hoses: As temperatures drop, disconnect, drain and store them in the shelter.
  10. Outdoor appliances and furniture: Store them away from the weather (BBQ and propane tank, garden furniture, etc.).
  11. Chimney: Remember to have your chimney swept once a year and check its condition on the roof (hat, masonry, etc.).
