Which travel expenses does your auto insurance cover?

Automobile Which travel expenses does your auto insurance cover?

If your vehicle was stolen, declared a total loss by your insurer or partly damaged in a collision, it may take some time to replace or repair it. How will you commute in the meantime? Here’s an overview of Endorsement 20, an additional coverage to your auto insurance that pays for your travel expenses while you are without your vehicle due to a loss covered under your policy.

What is Endorsement 20 – Travel Expenses?

As long as the amount of damages to the vehicle is greater than the corresponding deductible, Endorsement Q.E.F. No. 20 – Travel expenses applies. It repays, within the limits of the contract, the expenses incurred for you to travel until your car gets replaced or repaired.

An endorsement that changes from one insurer to another

The coverage varies from one insurer to another, but this endorsement usually includes a maximum repayment amount over a certain period. In some cases, the endorsement also provides for a maximum repayment amount per day.

Given the current backlogs affecting many claims, knowing the provisions in your endorsement is essential. Talk to your agent or broker to ensure they can meet your needs in the event of a loss.

What are the eligible travel expenses?

These costs generally are for the courtesy vehicle the repair shop loans you, or for a rental vehicle.  But these aren’t the only costs. You could also claim taxi, Uber, other online ride-hailing platforms or public transit fares. Please keep receipts for payments to support your claim.

When does Endorsement 20 apply?

Endorsement 20 comes into effect as soon as your vehicle is no longer roadworthy due to the damage sustained or, if it can still be driven, once it has been taken to a mechanic. If your car is stolen, your travel expenses are eligible starting at 12:01 a.m. on the day after you report the theft to the police or your insurer.
