Speeding: an unnecessary risk

Automobile Speeding: an unnecessary risk

In Quebec, speed is one of the main causes of accidents on the roads. When you find out that speeding only saves 2 or 3 minutes per trip, it can give you food for thought, considering the risks involved.

Speed limits

Late for an appointment? Feeling impatient with a driver who seems too slow? You hit the gas and... you've exceeded the speed limit!

According to the SAAQ, speed limits are set based on physiological limits (visual perception, reaction time) and the laws of physics (stopping distance, risk of skidding) in order to guarantee the safety of all road users. Speeding compromises your safety as well as that of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians around you.

Consequences of speeding

The consequences of exceeding the speed limit are direct and immediate:

  • Reduction of the vehicle's grip on the road surface.
  • Decreased field of vision.
  • Difficulty or impossibility of performing certain emergency manoeuvres.
  • Increased risk of an accident.
  • Increased violence of the impact in case of an accident.

On top of those risks, speeding can also result in a fine and demerit points.

Prevention

You already know what to do to reduce these risks:

  • Slow down!
  • Obey speed limits.
  • Keep your distance from the vehicle in front of you.

These tips will help you limit fender benders and reduce the risk of a more serious accident. Plus, remembering that your driving record affects your insurance premium gives you another good reason to abide by the speed limit.
