So that everyone can have auto insurance
Did you know that there’s a process allowing every auto owner to have insurance, even if they are considered high-risk or are no longer insurable? This is the auto insurance access mechanism, a tool managed by Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA).
Mandatory car insurance
In Quebec, the Automobile Insurance Act requires that ALL owners of vehicles on the roads have auto insurance that at least covers civil liability. The minimum amount for a private passenger vehicle is $50,000. Since this Quebec auto insurance component is covered by private insurance companies, one of GAA’s mandates is to guarantee access to this insurance, regardless of the risk that a policyholder represents.
It’s to fulfill this mandate that GAA has implemented the auto insurance access mechanism, which helps the most at-risk auto owners find insurance and, therefore, comply with the Act.
When it’s impossible to be insured
It’s important to note that the auto insurance access mechanism is not a substitute for the steps a motorist must take when having difficulties insuring their vehicle.
In fact, the Insurance Information Centre will only intervene after a consumer has taken certain steps and has not been able to find any insurance for their vehicle.
Valuable help for many motorists
Every year, many vehicle owners use GAA’s free auto insurance access mechanism to get insurance. Moreover, depending on each statement review, Insurance Information Centre agents often succeed in obtaining more comprehensive coverage than the minimum required by law to better meet the needs of the consumers who call on their services.
